Wine Drinking Jesus?
Written by Say So! Editors

wine-915Lily of the Valley.  The Almighty.  Lamb of God.  The Great I Am.  All of these titles and more, we attribute to Jesus.  He is the center focus of our faith.  His love and power, mercy and grace are extolled in our expressions of devotion to Him.  Jesus' unique ability to be both God and human is what empowers Him to justify and reconcile the human race unto a holy God.

Christians are immersed in a spiritual culture that focuses on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  We are taught from the very beginning of our "faith-walk" about Jesus' identity and His works on earth.  We hear about the healings, and the preaching and the disciples.  We learn about the many miracles that He performed while on earth.

The first recorded miracle is that of the "turning water in to wine" at the wedding at Cana [John 2:11].    For decades, this miracle has sparked debate amongst Christians as to whether or not it was wine or merely grape juice. Time Magazine recorded the opposing views of Southern Baptist, Billy Graham and Fundamentalist Presbyterian, Carl Mclntire in a 1977 article entitled, Did Jesus Drink Wine? http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,945726,00.html.

At any rate, it is in this account that we are witness to the power of Jesus and how He has command over the elements. Here, Jesus is at a party.  Yes, a party - a wedding reception to be exact, but a party none-the-less.  We often overlook this fact as Jesus is traditionally depicted as a somber, introspective, mild mannered man.  Party and traditional Jesus are two, historically antithetical concepts.

But, Jesus was human. The Bible tells us that He is acquainted with our grief [Isaiah 53:3].  Is He not also acquainted with our happiness?  Jesus came to earth and had the full human experience.  Was He the "wall-flower Jesus" He is commonly painted to be?  What type of party guest was He?  I surmise that he was the kind  of guest that would have gone to the store to replenish the drinks. Why do say this?  Because, He did just that.

The party was such a success that they ran out of wine.  Too many people, not enough wine.  So what did Jesus do?  The traditional Jesus, we often conjure in our minds, would have shut the party down.  He would have grabbed the microphone from the DJ and admonished the crowd that they should be glad there is no more wine; they weren't supposed to be drinking it anyway. But, Jesus didn't do that.  He satisfied the crowd with more wine.  He took the water and made it in to the best wine for the guests.  He kept the party going.  Which brings us to another notion - if Jesus saw that it was acceptable to create wine for the guests to consume did He partake in his own creation?  Wine drinking Jesus?

Do we really appreciate His humanity and His sacrifice?  Do we really recognize Him as having lived a life similar to ours?  Or do we elevate His earthly experience to a level that seems unfamiliar and unattainable to us mere mortal humans?  How would our perception of the Savior of mankind change if we really understood His humanity?  To be like Him is our ultimate goal.  Perhaps we are more like Him and He more like us then we realize.

Join the conversation and leave us a comment.  Let us know what other emotions or experiences we often disassociate with Jesus' earthly experience.

Wow, you've said a mouth full here! The mere fact that Christ was part human should help us to understand that we are not all spiritual ourselves. Yet, as Christians, we attempt to present ourselves to the world as if we have never done what they've done nor do what they do. The difference between us and them is the fact that we recognize that we are not perfect, we are forgiven. And, yes, I said "recognize. God has forgiven us time after time, even in our sin, however, many of us don't recognize that fact, and we continue to live in the same state.

To be like Jesus is what we sing! Well, if we would examine ourselves, we would see that we are like Jesus.

I love the point that you brought out. Thanks for sending this message. E.

The blood of the Grapes --remember God created it all --- the good and the bad. It's what we choose to do with it that may give it a bad name.....you have a choose, you are empowered.

Well, the Bible does show that Jesus turned water into wine but it does not say that he had any to drink. Therefore, we cannot add or take away from what the Word of God has stated to justify our weaknesses as humans or to compare Jesus' strength (Hebrews 4:12-15) and humanity to our own.

So true, James. Unfortunatley, people use this miracle to justify socal drinking when we each need to "study to show ourselves approved." Wine is defined as the fermented OR unfermentd juice of a fruit so we need to do our research and not just assume that everyone was just getting toasted. Thanks for contributing to the discussion.

Unfortanetly the church is always seeming to be very ignorant on this subject with Jesus, you dont turn water to wine at a wedding without intentions on drinking if it was unholy then why would a Holy God give it to anyone else, and they call it the best wine is normally saved for last. Also, it is stated in Matthew 11:19 Jesus came eating and drinking (drinking what, water?) of course not, it would be no need to express this in the scripture if Jesus was only drinking water, the pharisees, and other religious fanatics would have no grounds of accusing him of being a winebibber if he did not drink it apparently in the open. So we need to not be so insecure in our faith that we come up with the same things they did to call people sinners when in fact, it is not what goes in the mouth that is unclean, but what comes out, Matt. 15. The church needs to stop with the same old traditional religious attitudes, that don't get people saved, they just get more confused. We need to define the sin.

Again, if the Bible does not say it then we cannot ASSUME something that is not stated. This is the true cause for confusion in the Body of Christ - adding to God's Word to prove a point. The Bible clearly talks about not drinking strong drink in (Proverbs 20:1, 31:4-7) and to not be drunk with wine (Ephesians 5:17, 18).

You mean to tell me that there were only two types of beverages to drink in Jesus' day; wine or water? I find that hard to believe.

True it does say that about strong drink, but wine is not noted as strong drink, maybe vodka or gin or other drinks along with beer, but wine is not a strong drink. What does it mean to be a winebibber, is to have no self control which is the fruit of the Spirit. If what goes in a man does not defile him, but what comes out, then he is alread defiled before the wine if his actions are impure. The truth is what the pharisess missed on this too.Jesus served it and drank it having all the fruits of the spirit being self control, the accusation of winebibber was wrong. The Body deals with Truth the Truth of Christ and not keep people in bondage with traditions and religion just because it sounds good. God clearly defines the winebibber, from the act of drinking some wine. Again beng drunk implies too much wine, the inability to have self control, the sin needs to be defined, uncovering tradtions and false religion.
