Faith Forum: Purchased Salvation?
Written by Min. Robert & Dr. Astra Brantley - Submit your questions to faithforum@saysomagazine.com

moneyhandsI went to a church service last week and the guest preacher said that the Lord told him to give an offering of $100 to the church.  He then asked for those who were looking for supernatural blessings in the coming week to join with him and match his offering. He asked them to stand and bring their offering forward. A few people did go foward but I think this is inappropriate. What do you think?

RESPONSE:

What do you think was inappropriate?  Was it that the preacher publicly announced his $100 offering to the church?  Or that he said the Lord told him to do it?  Was it that he asked others to match him?  Or that he linked the offering to supernatural blessing?  (Which of our blessings are not supernatural?)  Was it that he asked folks to stand and bring their offering forward?  Would you have gone forward if the preacher had not requested a certain amount?  (What if God was telling another person to give $1,000?)

How and why should we give money to the church?  We pay our tithes because God said so;  and we give offerings because the Lord loves a cheerful giver. Respecting the restriction of the tree of knowledge, Adam and Eve demonstrated their faith in and loyalty to God.  After the fall, God could no longer test man through the tree of knowledge;  but humanity still needed a constant reminder that God is the source of every good and perfect gift (James 1:17) and that it is He who provides us with the power to get wealth (Deut. 8:18).  To remind us that He is the source of every blessing, God instituted a system of tithes and offerings.

The Scripture tells us that the tithe is “holy to the Lord,” symbolizing God’s ownership of everything (Lev. 27:30, 32).  It is to be returned to Him as His own.  When God calls for the tithe (Mal. 3:10), He makes no appeal to gratitude or generosity.  Far from abrogating this institution, the New Testament assumes its validity.  Jesus approved of tithing and condemned those who violate its spirit (Matt. 23:23).  Grateful Christians cannot limit their contributions to the church to tithe.  The Lord calls for liberal giving as He has prospered us.  God has promised to bless our faithfulness (Mal. 3:10-12).  Jesus said:  “For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required;  and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more” (Luke 12:28).

God has placed us in the role of stewards for our benefit, not for His.  It is to encourage our own spiritual growth and character development.  Financial stewardship is a biblical discipline that assists us in gaining victory over covetousness and selfishness, and leads to the development of habits of economy and efficiency.  It also blesses others and the church.

What is in our heart when we give.?  Do we give because we are thankful for what God has given, or are we trying to “buy a blessing?”  Are we trying to “show off” before men when we march with our tithes and offerings, or is our march a visual testimony of obedience?  Are we claiming to be more spiritual than others when we proclaim that “the Lord told me to do it,” or are we encouraging others to listen to God.  Listen to God, and give what you can, cheerfully!

LET THE REDEEMED OF THE LORD SAY SO!

I think it's wrong when pastor's threaten their congregations to GIVE. God wants a cheerful giver and does not want anything that is given begrudgingly. But if God has laid it on your heart to give a certain amount -- do what you feel lead to do.

I don't think it should be the place of any paster to MANDATE an OFFERING MINIMUM!!

Money Mike,

I totally agree with you. People should be prompted by the Holy Spirit and not by the pastors when it comes to giving. Thanks for your comment.

I agree with the other respondents. It took me 55 yrs to find a church that lead by the spirit and not make the congregants fill bad about what they gave. I'm so happy to give where I am now a non denominational church and pastor who NEVER ask or make you fell bad about what you give. really never brings it up. He just go into prayer at the time of offering I have seen this church prosper and grow with members over the last 2 years. Everyone is glad to give and that is what some of us speak of as why we love this pastor and church so much, ALL denominations are coming to this church. I wonder where is the annointing on the other places where as you have to ask.who want to attend a place where you aer pressured like that.

I read a blog called Provident Planning that focuses on Financial Wisdom from the Bible. They recently had a good post on their site about Tithing in general. They look at several Biblical examples of tithing in this article:

My pastor teaches us the 10-10-80 plan. 10% tithe, 10% savings, and you take your offering out of the 80% that you pay bills and live off of. It's time to get your finances in order saints. I know people personally that have stood in those $100 lines that can't even pay their rent. God will tell you when to give a sacrificial offering...for you, that might be $20 when your bank account is on "E". Great conversation, guys.

What we give should be based on what the spirit leads you to do. God commands that we bring the tithes and offerings to the storehouse. Our tithes are 10%, but out offerings are based on what we believe God is leading us to give. I believe that if you give little you get little and if you give more God gives more. Giving is an individual decision between you and God. Was it wrong for the Pastor to say if you want a supernatural blessing than match his gift? I would say no. If you believe that your Pastor is God sent and ordained that you must also believe in his leadership.

They that are led by the Spirit of God are the sons (and daughters of God). Be led by the Spirit In all thy ways, acknowledge Him and He will direct your path. These scriptures apply to our giving as well. Be led by by God in your offerings. Giving tithes is a mandate; be led by God in all other giving.
