Frankly Speaking: Spring Cleaning

Spring is in the air, and we are well on our way to summer. I love hot weather, and joking kept asking for – August during the East Coast blizzard this February. Whatever the state of the weather there is something I love to do….home organizing. I love seeing things come in order and after months of dark evenings and cold mornings, I love that I can throw open the windows, use the screens, put on some lively music and give my space a good cleaning. A friend recently introduced me to –  drum roll please—work gloves. These gloves are coated on the inside of your palms to give you a better grip. The joke is that these are my Spider Man gloves. Spring cleaning is now on! But wait, how do we spring clean our attitudes? Shouldn’t we endeavor to “go green”  with our attitudes? Do we need to be dusted, scrubbed, or cleaned? As Christians we are commanded to “love one another”. Do we display love at all times? Are there people we have already decided we are not going to love? Have our prejudiced, our education, our up bring, or our bourgeoisie attitude taught us not to love? Do we love the uneducated? Do we love the drug addict we see on the street? Do we love the single mother with more mouths to feed that we think she should have? Do we love the person who cut us off in traffic? Do we love our children’s friends, classmates? Do we love our parents and siblings or are we estranged from them? Do we love our co-workers? Do love obese people? Do we love folks who are naturally thin or at least slimmer that we are? Do we love those who have a different sexual orientation and tendencies than we do? Do we love children? Do we love our neighbors? Do we love men? Do we love women? Do we love teenagers? Do we love those with tattoos, and piercings and purple, pink or green hair? Do we love those we pass on the bus stop? Do we love the elderly? Do we love those who don’t speak English? Do we love those not born on our shores? How can we spring clean our attitudes so we can demonstrate the love of Christ to those who aren’t very high on our love scale? The Bible says we will know one another by our love. What must we as Christians “clean up” so our love will be seen? The last verse of a song written over thirty years ago states it best.

We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand
We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand
And together we'll spread the news that God is in our land
And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love
They will know we are Christians by our love

How can we clean up our homes, our cars, our lives, our workplaces, our attitudes, so that we can better demonstrate one-by-one on a daily basis that God is indeed in our land? Can we extend ourselves to help someone else? Sending checks to TV preachers with the promise of “more' is not enough. We must show and tell, and spring clean our hearts every day, so that people see God in us. Others must realize that He is indeed in our land, and surrender to Him. There are stony hearts which can only be made tender and fertile for the Word of the Lord as we take time to water people with kindness by an act, a deed and by sharing Christ. No matter what the season---think spring and show others Christ, so they will know we are Christians by our love.

Good article. Too often, so-called Christians say they love but don't act like it. They talk the talk but don't walk the walk.
